Pinterest Affiliate Marketing: A Practical Beginner Guide

Most beginners treat Pinterest like Instagram: paste a link under a copied product photo, post it and wait. A better approach treats Pinterest as a search engine and builds a path from the pin to a useful page.

Short answer: affiliate links are allowed on Pinterest, but your pins must be original, honest and clearly disclosed. Start with keyword research, make several different pins per topic, send people to a useful page that helps them decide, and give it at least three months. Avoid copied product photos and spammy volume.

Why Pinterest suits affiliates

People use Pinterest to look for ideas and plan purchases, and many searches are generic rather than brand names. That means a new account can compete on relevance and quality, not just follower count. Pins can keep appearing in search for a long time, unlike posts that vanish from a feed.

The catch is that the platform rewards useful content and punishes spam, so shortcuts do not last.

Rules and disclosure

Read Pinterest's commercial and branded content guidelines and your affiliate programme's terms. In general:

  • Run one authentic account rather than a network of accounts.
  • Make original content, not copies of a merchant's images and text.
  • Be transparent about the commercial nature of your pins and where links go.
  • Do not manipulate distribution, for example with fake saves or repetitive, high-volume affiliate pins.
  • Disclose clearly, such as "Affiliate link: I may earn a commission" near the start of the description, and above the first affiliate link on any page.

Amazon Associates and other programmes have their own rules about disclosures and images. This is not legal advice, so check what applies in your country.

Step 1: Keyword first

Pinterest users plan ahead, so search demand for seasonal topics starts weeks early. Use Pinterest Trends for rising topics, search autocomplete for long phrases and the keyword generator for ideas. Publish seasonal pins 6 to 8 weeks before the peak. See Pinterest keyword research.

Step 2: Choose offers worth the click

A click on a low-paying offer can earn very little. Compare your options:

RouteGood forNotes
Marketplace programmesEasy start, wide choiceCommission rates vary a lot by category
Brand programmes and networksFashion, home, beauty, softwareOften higher rates; check terms
High-value referral offersFinance, software, coursesUsually need a page that explains the offer
Bundles and "complete look" pagesFashion and homeMore items per visitor

Rates, eligibility and rules change often, so read the current terms before you build around any offer. See how to make money on Pinterest for other income routes.

Step 3: Original pins

Do not re-upload a white-background manufacturer image. Use your own photos, lifestyle collages, clear text and the right size (see Pinterest pin size). Make several different pins for each winning keyword rather than reposting one image. Pin Magic Studio helps with the layout work: Pin Magic Studio reads the link you paste and gives you 10+ pin designs built from 100+ templates. You can change the colours, fonts and photos, then export 1000 x 1500 PNG files.

Read fresh pins for what counts as new.

Many people browse Pinterest on a phone, and links often open inside the app. Test your own links on a phone before you publish dozens of pins: does the page load quickly, does it show what the pin promised and can people reach the merchant easily?

A bridge page, such as a blog post with a roundup or comparison, often works better than a raw link. It lets you explain, disclose and compare. See how to get traffic from Pinterest to your site. If you only sell your own Amazon products, read Amazon products on Pinterest instead.

Step 5: Pace and patience

Start with one pin a day, build to a pace you can review and keep going. Many accounts see little in the first weeks. Judge results over about 90 days, and look at analytics monthly rather than daily. See how often to post on Pinterest.

Five mistakes that stall accounts

  1. Quitting in the first few weeks.
  2. Checking analytics every day.
  3. Starting too broad with unrelated niches.
  4. Posting in bursts instead of steadily.
  5. Skipping disclosure or copying merchant images.

A 90-day plan

DaysWhat to do
1 to 7Set up a business account, choose one narrow niche, list 30 keywords
8 to 30Make and schedule one to two original pins a day, build a bridge page
31 to 60Increase the pace if you can review pins, test better offers
61 to 90Review analytics, make five new pins for each winning keyword

Frequently asked questions

Is affiliate marketing allowed on Pinterest?

Yes, if your content is original, transparent and not spammy. Read Pinterest's commercial content guidelines.

How long until I see results?

It varies. Many new accounts need several weeks to months, so judge over at least 90 days.

Do I need a blog?

Not always, but a bridge page helps with offers that need explaining and gives you a place for disclosure.

How many affiliate pins per day?

There is no official number. Start low, keep pins original and mix affiliate pins with useful content.

Why clicks but no sales?

Common causes are a weak link path on mobile, low-value offers and pins that attract browsers instead of buyers.
